IOMC: Powering the framework’s implementation programmes
As part of its mission, the Global Framework on Chemicals will launch implementation programmes to tackle the world’s most urgent chemicals and waste management challenges.
The Framework’s implementation programmes can focus on critical areas such as
(1) developing integrated chemicals and waste management systems at national and regional levels
(2) incorporating chemicals and waste management best practices into industrial sectors
(3) embedding sustainable chemicals management into key decision-making processes, and
(4) addressing other issues of concern raised by current and future Framework stakeholders.
The Inter-Organizational Programme for Sound Chemicals Management (IOMC), a partnership of 10 organizations, will collaborate with governments and other stakeholders to develop an initial set of implementation programmes. Additional programmes may be proposed by other stakeholders.
The IOMC is supporting implementation programmes by:
- Facilitating programme design: The IOMC is collaborating with governments, industry, and civil society to develop programmes aligned with the Framework’s strategic objectives.
- Coordinating stakeholder engagement: The IOMC is consulting with diverse stakeholders to shape and execute programmes. Please refer to the IOMC webinar series.
- Providing technical expertise: The IOMC is applying its expertise to ensure programmes are grounded in scientific principles and best practices.
- Developing programme frameworks: The IOMC will draft terms of reference, workplans, and mandates for an initial set of programmes that ensure programmes are result-driven and aligned with the Framework’s targets.
- Promoting knowledge sharing: The IOMC will foster the exchange of knowledge and best practices to continuously improve the effectiveness of implementation programmes.
With its unique partnership and expertise, the IOMC will help to guide the Framework's implementation programmes in delivering impactful, sustainable solutions for chemicals and waste management worldwide.
