UN Environment, together with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, has on 19-21 December hosted a workshop on the adaptation of Central Asian Mountains to climate change in sectors such as forestry, water, energy, biodiversity and disasters to better protect vulnerable mountain populations.
GIZ and UN Environment are promoting a regional dialogue for translating this into action. During the workshop, a strategic guidance document was discussed defining the climate adaptation goals for mountains in Central Asia and the means for achieving them
Preliminary findings were also presented from a draft ‘Outlook on Climate Change Adaptation in the Central Asian Mountains’ produced by UN Environment, GRID-Arendal and the Regional Mountain Centre for Central Asia. The Outlook assesses the current situation of climate change and adaptation in Central Asian Mountain regions. It also analyses the policy framework designed for current and future climate change impacts on various sectors and translates it into a set of recommendations for adaptation to climate change.
