National Council of Ministers endorses Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs)

Juba – The Council of Ministers of the Republic of South Sudan in its sitting chaired by the President of the Republic of South Sudan, His Excellence Salva Kiir Mayardit, have endorsed South Sudan’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) to United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC). INDCs are the pledges for reductions of greenhouse gas emissions by countries that signed the UNFCCC, including South Sudan.

South Sudan’s INDCs were prepared by the national Ministry of Environment with technical support from UN Environment’s office in South Sudan. South Sudan’s INDCs document highlighted the adaptation-related benefits of mitigation actions towards climate change, as well as other co-benefits including poverty alleviation, health, energy access and security. As a post-conflict country, it is imperative for South Sudan to ensure sustainable and climate-resilient development across all sectors. South Sudan’s INDCs also place emphasis on attracting financial, capacity-building, technology transfer and other types of international support to the republic of South Sudan. The INDCs were prepared through a cross-sectoral consultative process involving multiple stakeholders that was conducted in parallel to the National Adaptation Programme of Actions (NAPA) preparatory work and associated meetings.

The INDCs will contribute towards the attainment of South Sudan Vision 2040 and the South Sudan Development Plan, both of which aim to, amongst other objectives, ensure that economic development is environmentally sustainable.
