Honolulu – The Partnership on Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR) network is pleased to announce the release of its new book, “Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Adaptation in Practice”. The book was launched at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Hawaii on 04 September as part of a 2-hour session organized by IUCN and PEDRR partners, including UN Environment.
Containing original contributions from authors and case studies around the world, the book compiles recent developments globally in the field of ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction and climate change adaption (Eco-DRR/CCA).
It provides further evidence that ecosystem-based approaches make economic sense, and showcases how research has progressively filled knowledge gaps about translating Eco-DRR/CCA concepts into practice. It also highlights where key scientific and policy gaps still exist, helping to orient future efforts.
Designed to be practical, the book presents a number of methods, and tools that illustrate how Eco-DRR/CCA has been applied for various ecosystems and hazard contexts around the world. It also discusses how innovative institutional arrangements and policies are shaping the field of Eco-DRR/CCA. With a focus on economics, decision-making tools, policies and innovation, this publication will interest scientists, practitioners, policymakers and students alike.
Discussions are framed within relevant international debates, such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Paris Agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the new Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. In doing so, the book provides a forward-looking perspective on how Eco-DRR/CCA can advance implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
The book brings together many different institutions and experts, with Renaud, F.G. (UN University), Sudmeier-Rieux, K. (IUCN Commission on Ecosystems Management), Estrella, M. (UN Environment Programme), and Nehren, U. (Cologne University of Applied Sciences) as lead editors. Moreover, it is a truly international effort in its substance, with contributors and case studies coming from across the globe.
The second volume to be published through the PEDRR network, it is hoped that “Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Adaptation in Practice” will contribute to furthering our understanding of the value of Eco-DRR/CCA and continue to broaden its reach. Since the first volume, “The Role of Ecosystems for Disaster Risk Reduction”, was published in 2013 the field of ecosystem based disaster risk reduction has seen rapid and remarkable developments.
The PEDRR network is a global alliance of UN agencies, NGOs and specialist institutes. For more information on PEDRR’s work go to pedrr.org or join the community on Facebook. Access the book here.
