Juba – On 16 September, 2014, the National Ministry of Environment and UNEP South Sudan Office celebrated the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The event featured a press conference to disseminate information about depletion of the ozone layer and international efforts aimed at reducing harmful ozone depleting substances to the wider public in South Sudan.
Over twenty-five years ago, the world united to reverse the rapid depletion of the atmospheric ozone layer, through the ratification of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Today the Protocol is widely recognized as one of the most successful environmental treaties in history. It established legally binding controls on the national production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances, and the ozone layer is now well on track to recovery within the next few decades.
Heralding these achievements and the need for continued action, the press conference included statements from the National Minister for Environment - Hon. Deng Deng Hoi, the Acting Undersecretary, Ministry of Environment - Mr. Victor Wurda and UNEP South Sudan Officer-in-Charge - Mr. Arshad Khan. The remarks were followed by a question and answer session from the representatives of TV, radio and print media. The event received coverage on the national TV and radio.
