The objective of these guidelines is to help reduce the discharge of ship-generated marine litter (garbage) into the sea by the provision and improvement of the capacity and efficiency of port reception facilities and waste management practices onboard, thereby enhancing the protection of the marine and coastal environment.

These guidelines, developed as a part of the NOWPAP Marine Litter Activity (MALITA) project, aim to assist NOWPAP Member states, local governments, volunteers and NGOs, in monitoring marine litter on the seabed.

This report is divided into two parts with the ultimate aim of introducing technologies related to marine litter. The first part is concerned with prevention and collection of marine litter after establishing an understanding of its generation.

This publication – an outcome of the project on Marine Invasive Species in the NOWPAP region 2009-1010 - consists of national reports by NOWPAP member states on Marine Invasive Species, as well as a regional overview on Marine Invasive Species in the entire NOWPAP region.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Seas office released the Marine Biodiversity Assessment and Outlook: Global Synthesis, which provides the first systematic overview at a sub-global scale of the state of knowledge of marine biodiversity, the pressures it currently faces and the management frameworks in place for addressing those pressures. 

These guidelines were designed to assist local organizations, local governments and NOWPAP member states by providing information on port collection facilities as submitted by the member states or collected from the International Maritime Organization's Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS).

The objective of these Procedures is to enable NOWPAP member states to assess the status and impacts of eutrophication in their respective sea areas, by using information obtained through existing monitoring activities.

This regional report, based on National Reports, was put together in order to provide background information for further works on sea-based marine litter issues, and to provide general information on the situation regarding sea-based marine litter in the NOWPAP region. 

In order to review and analyze the existing Oil Spill Prediction Models (OSPMs) of NOWPAP Member states, information on the existing OSPMs were collected by national experts from the NOWPAP Members Expert Group. After collection of information, analysis and comparison of the OSPMs was carried out.

This regional guideline provides general recommendations and information needed for proper decision making when responding to accidents in the marine environment involving chemicals and dangerous goods. It shoud not, however, be taken as a substitute for the national guidelines and manuals on HNS spills response existing in NOWPAP member states.

The purpose of this report, and of establishing a Minimum Level of Preparedness to Oil Spills in the NOWPAP Region in general, is to set forth key elements in essential preparedness and overall response capabilities, with the hope that identifying these elements will help mitigate the impacts of future oil spills in the NOWPAP region.

As a part of measures to prepare against marine incidents involving Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) in the NOWPAP region, this report, developed by an Expert Group nominated by MERRAC Focal Points was put together to look into an HNS database for the region.
 

This publication is intended to provide information for the general public, governments and private sector on the marine litter problem and its solutions in the NOWPAP region.

This document outlines the NOWPAP Regional Oil and HNS Spill Contingency Plan, the purpose of which is to provide a framework under which NOWPAP Members may co-operate at the operational level in responding to oil and HNS spill incidents.

This document broadly discusses the NOWPAP regional action plan on marine litter (RAPMALI), beginning with the goals and objectives of the plan, moving into a discussion on its implementation, and concluding with a proposed work plan and budget for the years 2008 and 2009.

This report summarizes the current status of the marine environment in the NOWPAP region, describes major existing and emerging environmental problems, highlights knowledge gaps, and presents approaches on how to move forward to solve these problems.

This publication provides an overview on the current status of data and information on coastal and marine biodiversity in the northwest pacific region, as well as on the status of expertise and capacity building in support of marine biodiversity data and information research. The report concludes with recommendations for future actions.

The guidelines help to identify the types, amounts and sources of marine litter, and ultimately to protect human and animal health and safety, as well as to preserve the arine and coastal environment.
