Andrew Morton is the Energy and Engineering Programme Manager for the Post Conflict and Disaster Management Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme. He is an engineer by training with 27 years of post-graduate experience. His professional focus is on the development and implementation of practically oriented renewable energy and sustainable development programmes in challenging countries. He is adept at operating in remote, conflict and post-disaster environments.
His qualifications include a masters in geological engineering and vocational training certificates in project management, UK company direction, geothermal energy, renewable energy finance and hydropower technology. He speaks English and French. Before joining the UN, he worked in the oil and gas, engineering consulting and mining sector. His oil industry experience included environmental management for a Shell Petroleum offshore project in Russia and oil spills and waste management in Oman, Brunei and Nigeria. His early mining experience includes mining geology in Australia and emerald prospecting in Zimbabwe.
Within the UN he has worked on projects and issues in Afghanistan, Central African Republic, DR Congo, Haiti, Iraq, Lebanon, Liberia, Nigeria, Palestinian Territories, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Currently he is focusing on a off-grid renewable energy project in Haiti and a global project to improve the environmental and energy performance of the UN peacekeepers.
