Biography

Borislava Batandjieva-Metcalf has been Secretary of UNSCEAR since 2019.

With over 28 years of experience in radiation and nuclear safety, she has held roles as an inspector with the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Authority and a specialist at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where she developed international safety standards and provided assistance to Member States. She is also a Principal Coordination Officer in the Early Warning and Assessment Division.

Previously, she worked as an independent consultant and at the European Commission, supporting radioactive waste management and safety projects. She was a Country Group Chair and member of the General Committee at the fifth meeting of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management.

Ms. Batandjieva-Metcalf holds an MSc. in nuclear chemistry and physical chemistry from Comenius University in the Slovak Republic.
