Estonia: Innovating for sustainable lifestyles

The Government of Estonia which holds the Presidency of the next UN Environment Assembly hosted an important event on innovating to build sustainable lifestyles for all. It was a key milestone in our preparation for the next Assembly.

I’ve often said that there is no crisis we cannot innovate our way out of, and the environmental challenges we face are no exception. From tacking climate change to protecting biodiversity, and reducing pollution, the solution starts with innovation. In other words, it’s time to break the mould and get creative!

This was exactly the message of the Government of Estonia, which holds the Presidency of the next UN Environment Assembly. Tallinn hosted a preparatory meeting for the next UN Environment Assembly which will focus on how innovation can help us live sustainably.

At the high-level Earth Innovation Forum hosted by the Government of Estonia, I highlighted what it meant to embrace innovation. It means we focus on young people; defend science; build partnerships with people, governments, business; and remember that innovation is more than just the latest app, its a new way of organising society!

At the preparatory meeting for the UN Environment Assembly, member states deliberated on key focus areas for the next Assembly including: environmental challenges related to poverty and natural resources management, including sustainable food systems, food security and halting biodiversity loss; life-cycle approaches to resource efficiency, energy, chemicals and waste management; and innovative sustainable business development at a time of rapid technological change. I was particularly pleased with the presentation of a communications strategy for the Assembly because communications is a key enabler of success in climate action.
