Biography

Since June 2023, Isabel Martinez has assumed the role of Principal Advisor for Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) within the CSD. In this role, she provides support to MEAs regarding the administrative services of their secretariats and facilitates the sharing of best practices across such operational bodies.  

Isabel has over 25 years of experience in environmental policy, law and project management, with 20 years at UNEP and five with the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and environmental non-governmental organisations. She began her career at UNEP as a Legal Officer at the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC) in Mexico City. Isabel then served as a Programme Management Officer at the UNEP Coordination Office of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities in The Hague. Subsequently, she led initiatives such as the Caribbean Biological Corridor and the Latin America Environmental Training Network for ROLAC in Panama. From April 2018 to January 2024, she served as Head of the Legal Unit at the CSD. 

Isabel holds a law degree from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and a Master's Degree in Natural Resources Management from Leicester University in England.
