Monika Stankiewicz is Executive Secretary of the Minamata Convention on Mercury (since 2020).
Ms. Stankiewicz has over 25 years of experience working on environmental issues, including 18 years in secretariats of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs). She has led work on addressing pollution by hazardous substances and nutrients from all sources, addressing decline of marine biodiversity, and integrated marine environmental assessments. She has promoted use of best available science, gender mainstreaming and meaningful engagement of stakeholders, including indigenous peoples, local communities, and women, in the work of MEAs.
She was Executive Secretary of the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM) from 2012 to 2019, and Professional Secretary of HELCOM from 2006 to 2011, where she was in charge of the environmental impact of shipping, navigation safety and cooperation with the International Maritime Organisation. She worked in the Polish public administration's environment sector from 1998 to 2006.
Monika Stankiewicz has a Master of Science in Chemistry and a Certificate of Postgraduate Studies on European Integration from Gdansk University.
