Natalia Alekseeva

Biography

Ms Alekseeva has been a Coordinator of the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration since May 2022 with UNEP, HQ. She has over 20 years of experience in the field of environmental protection, climate change, water management and development. She had started her career in academia and education, then consulted and managed projects for various multi- and bi-lateral organizations.

At the regional level in Central Asia, she was a staff member of several international organizations, such as UNEP (Head of Central Asia Office), UNDP (Water Programme Coordinator for Central Asia), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, GIZ (Regional Advisor).

On a global level, she worked as a Senior Networking Officer at the Global Water Partnership Secretariat in Stockholm, serving three Regional Water Partnerships (GWP Central and Eastern Europe, GWP Caucasus and Central Asia, and GWP Mediterranean) and being a focal point for the thematic area of transboundary cooperation and water security. Her previous assignment before re-joining UNEP in her current role was with FAO HQ as a Workstream Leader at the Office of Climate Change, Environment and Biodiversity in Rome. 

Ms Alekseeva completed her PhD studies at St. Petersburg State University (Russia) at the Department of Environmental Security and Sustainable Development. She also holds a Specialist Diploma in Environmental Protection and Use of Natural Resources and Geography from the Belarusian State University in Minsk and a Master of Science in Environmental Science and Policy from the Central European University (Budapest, Hungary) and the University of Manchester (United Kingdom).
