Biography

Neville is the Director of UNEP-WCMC, the specialist biodiversity centre of UNEP, where he provides overall direction, strategy, and leadership to the Centre. With UNEP since 2010, he has over 25 years of experience working internationally. He had a strong engagement in developing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Neville was previously Deputy Director of UNEP’s Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (now Ecosystems Division) and head of the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Branch. In these roles, he led the process to establish the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, oversaw UNEP’s work to tackle illegal wildlife trade, and provided oversight of the UNEP Global Environment Facility portfolio on biodiversity and land degradation. 

Before UNEP, Neville was Head of the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Ecosystem Management Programme, and Head of Ecosystem Assessment at UNEP-WCMC, where he played a key role in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. He has worked with a range of assessment and policy processes, and in his early career, he was a researcher and manager of conservation initiatives in Asia and Africa.

Neville has a zoology and genetics degree from the University of Sheffield and a Master's Degree in Conservation Biology from the University of Kent.
