Biography

Sonja has over 12 years of experience in full project cycle management and implementation, international negotiations with governments, donors, civil society organisations, academia and the private sector. Her work focuses on sustainable development and environmental protection, focused on biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management and climate adaptation. 

Sonja has been with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 2013. As an overall coordinator of the portfolio in the Western Balkans, she is responsible for developing projects together with numerous clients, supervises project implementation and ensures daily cooperation with partners, governments and donors. She manages a project portfolio of approximately 24 million US dollars implemented in six countries. Prior to this position with the UN Environment Programme, Sonja worked as an expert consultant in the private sector, focused on environmental monitoring and reporting systems, as well as an ecotoxicological health data analyst.

Sonja holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry and Biology and Master of Environmental Sciences and Management from Ryerson University in Canada. In her free time, Sonja enjoys spending time with her daughter in nature and painting.
