Head of the UN Environment Programme Russia Office


Biography

A geographer by background, holds a Master’s degree in Geography from M.V.Lomonosov Moscow State University and a Master’s degree in Environmental Management from the European Postgraduate Course in Environmental Management – a joint course with four Dutch Universities.  

Vladimir has accumulated 30 years’ experience, including working for Soviet and Russian State Environmental Protection authorities. From 1995 till 2010 he was working for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as the Head of Sub-regional Office for Russia and CIS where he led development and implementation of the IUCN Sub-regional Programme. His areas of work and expertise during this period concentrated on Forest Conservation; ECONET and Protected Areas, Rare and Endangered Species, Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development, Arctic Ecosystem, Conservation and Sustainable Use of Mountains, Sustainable Fishery and Public Support for Conservation Initiatives. 

Since 2011 he works for UNEP's Russia Country Office in Moscow. The main priority areas for cooperation are to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, with green economy as a key mechanism for doing so.  

An important part of the Office’s activities is assisting Russia as an emerging donor, including by drawing on the country’s expertise and helping the country develop and carry out environmental conservation projects under Russia’s Official Development Assistance Programme.
