The UNEP New York Office works to keep environmental issues high on the global agenda through effective outreach and communication at the heart of the United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ). We sustain collaboration between UNEP, the UN Department of Global Communications, UN System partners and a wide range of stakeholders in support of UNEP’s mandate, particularly in tackling the three planetary crises - climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
We participate in interagency communications task forces and coordination groups established for high-level events. There, we advocate for greater environmental focus and messaging in UNHQ-based meetings, such as the UN High-Level Political Forum and UN General Assembly. We drive and facilitate partnerships and collaboration with UN agencies and other stakeholders, including with UN-affiliated non-governmental organizations.
We organize exhibitions and special events to mark key international days like World Environment Day, International Day of Clean Energy, Zero Waste Day, World Migratory Bird Day and International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. Our office facilitates the engagements of UNEP Goodwill Ambassadors at UNHQ during their visits to New York. We additionally promote and share UNEP initiatives, campaigns, scientific reports and their findings with Member States for awareness and informed decision-making on environmental matters.
