The Republic of Zambia is home to approximately 18 million people, with the population expected to grow to 24 million by 2030. The urban population is currently 7.8 million, making Zambia one of the most urbanised countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite a high level of reliance on nonmotorised transport (NMT) in Zambian cities and rural centres, many streets are not designed for people to walk or cycle. Greater emphasis on walking, cycling, and public transport is needed to achieve a more equitable allocation of road space.
