Both used vehicle importer and exporter countries have a responsibility to ensure that only the best available technology is traded. The aim of the Used Vehicles Programme is to support the development and implementation of minimum criteria and standards that importing and exporting countries can use to curb the trade in obsolete, ageing, unsafe and polluting cars.
The Used Vehicles Programme works with governments, industry, academia and civil society stakeholders to ensure the flow of better quality of used vehicles through a combination of regulations such as harmonized regional agreements, age restriction policies, import bans, fiscal incentives, labelling and awareness raising among others.
