Perspective No. 32: Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) through Nairobi National Park: Will the Iconic Park Survive?

Nairobi National Park is home to more than 100 species of mammals, over 60 species of reptiles and amphibians, and more than 500 species of plants and birds live in the park today. As one of the few protected areas in the world, Nairobi National Park is experiencing the greatest encroachment since its inception in 1946. In the middle of the park, large swathes of land are being cleared, more than 200 workers and tall cranes dominate the landscape, and loud trucks move to and fro for the construction of the multi-pillared Standard Gauge Railway. The view of the ongoing construction speaks volumes about the environmental concerns it raises.
