UNEP, through the Global Wastewater Initiative (GWWI - under the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities) has provided support to the Tanzanian government in developing the Guidelines for the Application of Small-Scale, Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems. This activity has been jointly implemented by UNEP together with the Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA) - a member of the GWWI - and UN-Habitat and supported the scaling-up of decentralized sanitation solutions, called Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) throughout Tanzania. The final document has been presented to the relevant Ministry and used as a basis for developing standards on decentralized wastewater treatment systems, which may be useful for replication in other countries.
