The liberalization process in the Chilean mining sector involved not only tariff reductions, but also changes in the regulatory framework concerning the foreign direct investment regime. The environmental effects analyzed include air and water quality, water use, and biodiversity. Even though it was impossible to provide a quantitative result, an indicative qualitative result provides an insight as to the effects, and the problems and opportunities implied.
