This technical report investigates the benefits of planned road and rail transport infrastructure projects for society and the economy, as well as the consequences for biodiversity and ecosystem services. To date, impacts of infrastructure development on ecosystem services have not been widely studied on larger scales. The report provides a consistent assessment across global metrics, producing a foundational perspective on the risks and benefits of near-future road and rail infrastructure.
The database developed and used in the report can also be explored using the Global Infrastructure Impact Viewer (GIIV), an online tool that was created for this project.
