Habari Kushughulikia Mazingira

The Africa Youth Climate Assembly which took place in Nairobi, Kenya ahead of Africa Climate Week and Summit 2023 wrapped up today.

Held under the theme, “African-led Solutions to Global Challenges”, the youth-led assembly provided young people a platform to present their declaration on critical environmental and climate issues to Heads of State.

The final output document, the Nairobi Youth Climate Declaration, will articulate the demands of young people that will feed into the Nairobi Declaration, UN General Assembly and COP 28.

With 20 per cent of Africa’s population expected to be between 15 and 24 by 2030, young Africans are key to the global fight against climate change and the efforts to achieve climate justice.

Children in Africa disproportionately affected by climate change

Children in the Central African Republic, Chad, Nigeria, Guinea, Somalia and Guinea-Bissau are the most at risk of the effects of climate change, according to a report released today by UNICEF.

Children are physically less able to withstand and survive hazards such as floods, droughts, storms and heatwaves and their access to nutrition, safe water, sanitation and quality education are all impacted by the climate crisis.

UNEP and UNICEF are working together on a number of projects that help communities across Africa become more resilient as they adapt to the impacts of a changing climate.

Breaking the vicious cycle of flood and drought in Zambia

Wetlands absorb excess rainwater into the ground during floods and provide sources of water in times of drought and store carbon, making them a vital climate defence.

However, wetlands are disappearing across the world at alarming rates – three times faster than forests. Building climate resilience through ecosystem-based adaptations such as restoring wetland help local communities reduce vulnerability to climate change.

With the help of UNEP and the Global Environment Facility, the government of Zambia has undertaken a four-year project to help communities near the Lukanga and Bangweulu wetlands, a vast wetland spanning 2,600 km2.

Climate change exacerbates desertification which in turn makes climate change worse. It’s a vicious cycle that countries of Africa’s Sahel region want to stop with a “wall” of restored forests and lands stretching more than 8,000 km across the continent.

The UNEP supported initiative has been selected among the first 10 World Restoration Flagships of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

A mosaic of green, productive landscapes across 11 countries, the Great Green Wall aims to help people and nature cope with the impact of the climate crisis and the degradation of vital ecosystems.
