Ethiopia has seen significant progress in key human development indicators in the past decades: primary school enrolment has quadrupled, child mortality has been cut in half and the number of people with access to clean water has more than doubled.
The main challenge for Ethiopia is to sustain positive economic growth and accelerate poverty reduction, which will require significant progress in job creation and the continued implementation of improved governance practices. The Government is working hard to achieve this, devoting a very high share of its budget to pro-poor programs and investments and implementing its Growth and Transformation Plan (2015–2020), which aims for continued improvement in physical infrastructure through public investment projects and transformation of the country into a manufacturing hub. The Government’s overarching goal is to make Ethiopia a middle-income country by 2025. Ethiopia identified agriculture, manufacturing and integrated waste management as the priority sectors for SWITCH Africa Green interventions in the country.
The national institution guiding programme implementation in Ethiopia is the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Commission.
The SWITCH Africa Green programme is developed and funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme and European Union Delegations in the participating countries.
