The Challenge

Kenya has fairly well-developed policies, laws and standards to support the green transition, emanating from the Constitution of Kenya 2010, which bestows the right to a clean and secure environment. The country also has the Green Economy Strategy and Implementation Plan (2016–2030) as well as other sector-specific laws, policies and standards that support green growth. Nonetheless, uptake of green growth processes and practices has been limited, mainly due to lack of coherence in the regulatory framework and weak enforcement mechanisms and institutional capacities. The Government is embarking on initiatives to tame the rising cost of doing business by, among other things, sustaining macroeconomic stability and investing in basic infrastructure and services. Kenya identified agriculture, manufacturing and tourism as the priority sectors for SWITCH Africa Green intervention.
