Regular updates are keeping stakeholders informed of progress with UNEP’s Ogoniland project.
UNEP’s environmental assessment represents an unprecedented effort to examine the extent, nature and implications of oil contamination in Ogoniland, and options for remediation.
The project is complex. The fieldwork was varied and involved assessing hundreds of impacted sites in the Ogoni region based on information provided by Nigeria's National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, the Department of Petroleum Resources, Ministry of Environment, Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria and satellite imagery. Importantly, this list of sites was supplemented on an ongoing basis with information received directly from local residents.
