UNEP plays a key role in supporting the implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) focused on biodiversity.

Key Biodiversity-Related MEAs and UNEP's Role

  1. Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
UNEP serves as the host of the Secretariat for the CBD, facilitating its implementation at both global and national levels. UNEP supports countries in developing National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) that align with the CBD’s objectives, providing technical assistance and capacity-building to enhance national capacities in biodiversity management.
  1. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)
UNEP collaborates with CITES to combat illegal wildlife trade and promote sustainable practices. Through training programs and workshops, UNEP helps countries strengthen their legal frameworks and enforcement mechanisms, ensuring compliance with CITES provisions.
  1. Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS)
UNEP supports the CMS by facilitating the development of instruments and action plans for the conservation of migratory species. UNEP provides technical guidance to countries for establishing protected areas and implementing conservation measures, fostering international cooperation to protect migratory species and their habitats.
