Successful nature-based, low-cost solutions are being implemented across various regions, demonstrating their versatility and impact. In East Africa, UNEP-led, GEF-funded projects have pioneered the use of innovative constructed wetlands to treat wastewater, preventing pollution of freshwater and marine ecosystems. Other examples include [additional case studies]. These initiatives highlight the transformative potential of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in addressing environmental challenges while delivering benefits for both people and nature.
UNEP plays a key role in identifying, scaling up, and promoting NbS best practices through its wide array of projects and programs. These best practices focus on protecting, managing, and restoring ecosystems to address societal challenges, such as climate change, water security, and biodiversity loss. UNEP ensures the use of proven, efficient methods and technologies, optimizing resources and improving project outcomes.
By integrating NbS into national policies, providing scientific and technical expertise, and fostering international cooperation, UNEP helps countries implement scalable solutions. UNEP’s approach also includes raising community awareness, strengthening enforcement mechanisms, and guiding projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and with measurable benefits for both people and the environment.
