Ecosystem-Based Approaches

UNEP develops and advances ecosystem-based approaches to management through integrated thinking across freshwater, coastal and marine environments.

UNEP aims to unify environmental, economic, and social dimensions to support effective decision-making and to implement management solutions for the sustainable use of marine and coastal ecosystems

Integrated ecosystem-based management seeks to balance ocean, coastal, and freshwater resource use with conservation, acknowledging ecosystem connectivity. It involves coordinated land and sea activity management to minimize cumulative impacts on marine and coastal ecosystems. This approach overcomes limitations of single-sector strategies, offering holistic human-ecosystem interaction management.

UNEP supports a sustainable blue economy, fostering integrated management solutions. This aids Sustainable Development Goals and global environmental agreements, such as the Global Biodiversity Framework. Target 1 of this framework aims for participatory integrated spatial planning and effective management, reducing biodiversity loss by 2030 while respecting indigenous and local rights.
