About TEEB

Bridging Economy and Ecology

At the heart of our mission, we aim to transform how society values and interacts with nature. Through initiatives like TEEB for Agriculture and Food (TEEBAgriFood), our work on Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (NCAVES), and our recently launched multi-partner project on Restoring Landscapes in South Africa (ReLISA), we want to make nature’s values visible and advocate for their integration into economic decisions, policy frameworks, and agricultural practices. Our goal is to transform food systems sustainably – for a better future for people and planet.

Global Initiatives, Local Impact

Since its inception in 2017, the TEEBAgriFood initiative has spanned across 14 countries and had significant impacts:

  • In Indonesia, agroforestry has been included in the national development plan
  • In India, TEEB principles have been included in the syllabus of a new undergraduate course B.Sc (Natural Farming) by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, to be included in four central agriculture universities and 51 State agriculture universities
  • In Brazil, UNEP, through TEEB initiative, collaborated with the Brazilian government on a new policy on Urban and Periurban Agriculture (UPA) that seeks to promote food security, minimize waste, and expand local economies through better utilization of urban spaces

The TEEB NCAVES project, supported by the European Union, aimed to mainstream ecosystem and biodiversity values into national and global accounting systems, piloting in nations like Brazil, China, and South Africa. This endeavor enhances policy planning and implementation towards sustainable development goals.

Together for a Sustainable Future

Each project under our umbrella is a cornerstone for the global movement towards sustainability. By accounting for biodiversity and ecosystem services, fostering sustainable agricultural and food systems, and valuing natural capital, we envision a future in which the natural world is respected and preserved.
