The complaint, filed by multiple environmental and human rights organizations including Rainforest Action Network and the Global Forest Coalition, asserts that UNEP, in supporting the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), has breached several of its own policies. Specifically, UNEP's involvement with TNFD allegedly violates good governance and environmental defenders, and access-to-information policies among others.
The complainants request that UNEP re-evaluates its involvement with TNFD, enforcing UNEP’s policies on environmental and human rights protection, transparency, and stakeholder inclusion.
Case Status: Closed
After a careful initial assessment of the points raised in the complaint, the Independent Office for Stakeholder Safeguard-related Response (IOSSR) has confirmed that the TNFD operates independently, under its own governance and management procedures through a dedicated secretariat. IOSSR therefore considers this case closed and the complainant was informed accordingly on 14 February 2025. Notwithstanding the above, and while UNEP’s direct influence on TNFD is limited, UNEP will convey the concerns raised to the TNFD Secretariat
