When: 16-21 March 2025
Where: Brasília, Brazil
Theme: Accelerating Action on Super Pollutants: The Road to COP30
Global momentum to tackle short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) received a major boost as ministers, scientists, and partners from around the world convened in Brazil for the Climate and Clean Air Conference 2025, hosted by the Government of Brazil and the UNEP-convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC).
Taking place in the lead-up to COP30 in Belém, the conference marked a critical milestone to accelerate mitigation of super pollutants in new climate action plans including methane, black carbon, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and tropospheric ozone — which are responsible for nearly half of global warming to date and severely impact human health, agriculture, and economies.
New initiatives launched during the conference reflect the CCAC’s mission to turn science into action:
- UNEP’s updated Global Strategy to promote low-sulfur fuels and clean diesel fleets;
- A CCAC TEAP report on black soldier fly technology to cut methane from organic waste;
- A new policy brief on digital tools for livestock methane reduction;
- A sustainability strategy for the Bioceanic Road Corridor;
- Expansion of the LOW-M initiative to new cities including Belém, Fortaleza, and Rio de Janeiro, alongside release of new data guidance for methane tracking.
These efforts build on the COP29 Organic Waste Methane Declaration, now supported by 62 countries representing over 50% of global methane emissions from waste.
