In the coming weeks the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is releasing a series of reports, with a special focus on the restoration of nature in line with the main theme of this year’s World Environment Day (5 June). The day also serves as the official launch of the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. Below are thumbnail descriptions of reports in preparation by UNEP, partners and affiliated bodies, including planned release dates.

Measuring Progress: Nature and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
UNEP and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity
An analysis of progress made against environment-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators since December 2018, to show the interlinkages between the “state of environment” and “state of society” indicators; and “state of environment” and “drivers of change” indicators.

Global Rangeland Atlas
The Rangelands Atlas has been developed to document and raise awareness on the enormous environmental, economic and social value of rangelands as well as their different ecosystems. It highlights many of the changes taking place in rangelands due to climate change, land use and conversion trends, investments and other changes. The atlas is a collaborative initiative of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the global Rangelands Initiative of the International Land Coalition (ILC).

UNEP and the World Economic Forum (WEF)
A first annual global analysis of public and private finance of nature-based solutions to the world’s climate, biodiversity and desertification crises. Sets stage for a WEF-hosted Nature Summit June 2021 on needed levels of public and private finance for nature.

Global Ecosystem Restoration report
UNEP and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
Launched just ahead of World Environment Day and the UN’s Decade for Ecosystem Restoration, the report documents how restoration meets multiple needs, the financial investment required for it in the coming decade, and the expected returns for people and nature.
