This side event aims to present the challenges and opportunities for electric transportation in different countries of Latin American and Caribbean by providing an overall status of the region and highlighting the progress of Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba and Panama.
The panelists, high-level representatives of each country, will address the advancement of electric mobility in their countries, their goals for the future, and the main obstacles towards the decarbonization of the transport sector. See more details per country below:
- Argentina will address the development of its national electric mobility strategy, its interest in hydrogen as a fuel and the progress on the extraction and modification of lithium for batteries.
- Chile will present its recent national electric mobility strategy and address its implementation, which has been focused on the deployment of electric buses in the public transport system.
- Costa Rica will present the outputs of electric mobility incentives and promotion law, its national experience with electric mobility demonstration projects and the next steps that the country will take to fulfill the carbon neutrality goals.
- Cuba will present its approach to electric mobility and its pilot taxi project which consists of locally designed and assembled electric three-wheelers.
- Panama will share details on the implementation of its national electric mobility strategy, the experience of specialized working groups on this issue and the introduction of electric buses in its mass transit system (Mibus).
The second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference will provide an opportunity to focus attention on the opportunities, challenges and solutions towards achieving sustainable transport worldwide. It follows up on the first Global Sustainable Transport Conference, held in 2016 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, and is expected to indicate a way forward for sustainable transport to help achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change in the Decade of Action.
