This high-level event, addressed at all actors interested in the prevention and management of waste, will see the launch of the Roadmap for the closure of dumpsites in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The voluntary coalition of governments and relevant organizations for the progressive closure of dumpsites in Latin America and the Caribbean was established within the framework of the XXI Meeting of the Forum of Ministers of the Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2018. Recently, as a result of the XXII Meeting of the Forum of Ministers of the Environment, which took place in February 2021, the ministers agreed on an integrated approach to face the threat of pollution (Decision 1), with the purpose of urging countries to minimize the generation of waste and to progressively eradicate inappropriate final disposal practices, based on the technical, environmental, economic and social inclusion considerations of the Roadmap.

Participants will discuss the situation of waste management in the region, the baseline for the progressive closure of dumpsites in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Coalition's work plan for the 2022-2022 period.
