UNEP is participating in the START Summit and START Hack 2022, connecting its mandate with the entrepreneurial and digital spirit of Start Global. START Summit brings over 5,000 startups, investors, corporations, and young talents together to promote innovation through workshops, keynotes and hosting a hackathon. We will explore how we can harness the potential of modern technologies to address natural disasters in a real-world case. UNEP is also present at the Sustainability Lounge where you can explore a bit more of what we do.
Technology, especially Modern Technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Drones, have the power to transform every aspect of disaster management.
Data-driven technology has evolved extremely in recent years and can quickly analyse data, support decisions, and make predictions. In the case of the spread of forest fires or floods, the course can be anticipated, which leads to faster and better decisions and can protect human lives. Especially in emergency situations or in situations where a multitude of influences are at work, AI can help to structure them. Drones and robots can reach areas in an emergency where people would otherwise be cut off from the outside world.
UNEP wants to empower states, cities, and initiatives in disaster management and change the way we look at disaster management. We are actively researching the possibilities of AI and have the ambition to establish it in UN’s country-specific programs on the ground. As disaster management still relies heavily on manpower, we want to incorporate knowledge of modern technologies benefitting all. Young people have a different view, perspective, and understanding of global challenges. Entrepreneurs are important because they change faster and foster innovation. Together we can shape the future.
The event takes place from the 23rd till the 25th of March in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
