When: 31 October – 12 November 2021
Where: Glasgow, Scotland, UK
What: UNEP at the climate COP26 (report launches, events and more)
This is most important inter-governmental meeting on the climate crisis since the Paris Agreement was passed in 2015. This is when the pledges countries made in 2015 will be reviewed for the first time, in a 5-year review cycle.
Nations agreed to a legally binding commitment in Paris to limit global temperature rise to no more than 2C above pre-industrial levels, but also offered national pledges to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Those pledges are insufficient to meet the target, and governments are expected to review and increase these pledges as a key objective.
The meeting also provides an opportunity to consider how the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the implementation of the Paris Agreement can be mutually supportive.
