Food systems

UNEP promotes sustainable food consumption and production patterns that protect and enhance biodiversity and support climate stability and a pollution-free planet.

Food systems are key to tackling the triple planetary crisis, but they are falling short in meeting the needs of both people and the planet.

Food systems depend on a healthy planet, but they are also a major driver of the triple planetary crisis with increased carbon emissions, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Meanwhile, they are failing in their primary objective of feeding the planet with more hunger, more inequality, and more food wasted. A food systems transformation that prioritizes resilience, sustainability, and equity is urgently needed to solve the triple planetary crisis and achieve sustainable development.

Partnerships, networks, centres and programmes collaborating with UNEP

The work on food systems cuts across several initiatives, such as Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), partnerships, and other key entities.
