This workshop is part of the development of a project proposal to be submitted to the Green Climate Fund. UN Environment IETC is gathering local stakeholders to identify opportunities for reducing greenhouse gases emissions from the waste sector, targeting Special Economic Zones and Industrial Parks. In doing so, the workshop will assess the environmental, social and economic needs and challenges specific to these concentrated forms of industrial development.
Currently, there are over 56 special economic zones (SEZs) in Kenya and this number is growing. Although SEZs have a great potential for the economic development of the country, they also have the potential to cause substantial environmental damage and threaten the health of local communities. This is why IETC is partnering with local authorities and businesses to promote sustainability principles in the management of SEZs.
