IETC's work focuses on waste management.
UNEP International Environment Technology Centre works for Integrated Solid Waste Management towards Zero Waste. Our primary focus is to embed the "3R" principles – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – within waste management systems. This strategy enhances the safe recovery of secondary raw materials and actively reduces harmful practices like open burning and dump sites.
Our integrated approach encompasses three key pillars:
1. Thematic approach: We delve into essential themes such as waste management strategies, the intersection of waste and climate change, and the gender dimension in waste management.
2. Individual waste streams: Our efforts extend to specific waste streams like plastic waste, E-waste, mercury waste, and more. By targeting these areas, we maximize our impact on critical waste-related issues.
3. Outreach activities: We actively engage with communities through a range of outreach activities, forging connections and fostering awareness about sustainable waste management practices.
By taking an integrated approach, we also contribute to the advancement of existing knowledge on waste management. Our initiatives produce specialized knowledge products like the Global Waste Management Outlook, driving the evolution of effective waste management practices on a global scale.
