This video was produced by the CSIR (South Africa) for the launch of the Africa Waste Management Outlook (June 2018).
Only 4% of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generated in Africa is recycled – while 70-80% of MSW is estimated to be recyclable. And more than 90% of waste is disposed of at uncontrolled dumpsites and landfills, often with associated open burning. Current inappropriate waste management in Africa is causing economic, social and environmental impacts.
The United Nations Environment Programme and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) released the first Africa Waste Management Outlook on 5 June 2018, World Environment Day, at the Sustainability Week in Pretoria.
The consolidated waste management outlook publication is the result of contributions by experts and researchers from across the African continent and provides an analysis of the state of waste management in Africa, its impact on the continent and proposed solutions for improved waste management in the region.
Now English and French version are available for the full report and summary for decision-makers.
