This Composting Guideline is one of the guideline series published by IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET) and the International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC)of UNEP. It focuses on composting as one of the most preferred technology options for organic waste management to reduce environmental impacts and move forward toward the creation of a sustainable society.
By collaborating with National Institute for Environmental Studies and the Japan Society of Material Cycles and Waste Management, composting projects in the cities of developing Asia were being studied. The research looked into the projects based on source separation of organic waste and aerobic fermentation at plants for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management. This guideline aims to assist decision-makers and policy-makers at the local level, who seek technical information and background on composting. Key evaluation criteria and a pre-check flow are also provided as helpful tools to objectively determine and evaluate when considering the potential of introducing composting projects.
