Ministers of Environment from 57 Islamic counties have adopted on 3 October 2019 a strategy on the activation of cultural and religious factors in protecting the environment to achieve sustainable development in the Islamic world. This comes as part of the deliberations of the eighth Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers held in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco.
The conference which was held under the patronage of King Mohamed VI also adopted the guidelines on strengthening the role of youth and civil society in the protection of the environment.
In a speech by the King of Morocco, sent to the ministers convening in Rabat, the King announced the establishment of the Islamic Academy for the Environment and sustainable development. While Princess Sumaya bent Alhasan, President of the Royal Scientific Society of Jordan, highlighted the importance of adopting innovative approaches to tackle the complex challenges the world is facing, especially climate change and ecosystem degradation.
Iyad Abumoghli, principal coordinator of the Faith for Earth Initiative, who participated in the conference, reiterated the importance of such strategies in enhancing the role of the Islamic Nations in contributing to the global efforts in mobilizing all sectors of the community to live sustainably according to their faith beliefs. “We are honored that this strategy was inspired by the Faith for Earth strategy and made many references to it,” Abumoghli added.
At the conclusion of the conference, the participating ministers and representatives of Member States adopted the conference declaration and agreed to open channels of cooperation with Islamic and international organizations with a special emphasis on the Faith for Earth Initiative.
