Ecologist Julia Carabias has devoted much of her career to restoring ecosystems damaged by human development, work that saw her in 2005 named a Champion of the Earth, the United Nations’ highest environmental honour.
A former environment minister of Mexico, she is one of the authors of a landmark new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Making Peace with Nature. The publication is a blueprint for how the world can tackle three looming environmental crises: climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.
Carabias recently sat down to answer some of the internet’s most burning questions in the latest edition of UNEP’s Ask a Scientist series. Watch the video to hear her views on the link between poverty and the environment and other issues.
