The Earth is on track to reach 3°C of warming by the end of the century under current policies – twice the amount of the Paris Agreement’s most ambitious target – a new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reveals.
Governments and businesses must take urgent action to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 42 per cent by 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5°C, according to the Emissions Gap Report 2023.
In addition to providing an update on where global greenhouse gas emissions are heading and where they should be, the report focuses on energy transitions in low- and middle-income countries and looks at the role of carbon dioxide removal in countering the climate crisis.
The 28th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) will be held from 30 November to 12 December, 2023 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. It aims to drive action on climate change by reducing emissions and halting global warming. COP28 will explore the results from the first-ever Global Stocktake, which assesses progress toward the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global temperature rise to below 1.5°C.
