India: Banking on solar

I was honoured to attend the inaugural session of the International Solar Alliance co-hosted by the governments of India and France.

Perhaps one of the most exciting developments in our fight against climate change in recent years has been the launch of the International Solar Alliance. I was honoured to attend the inaugural session of the International Solar Alliance co-hosted by the governments of India and France.

I believe that the Alliance is a big step towards greater global energy security and a milestone in the fight against climate change and pollution. The Alliance fits well with our programme of work on renewable energy.

There is no contradiction between lifting people out of poverty, addressing pollution and climate change. Solar energy can help us do all! At the Summit, Indian Prime Minister Modi set out a 10 point agenda for the International Solar Alliance reminding us that solar energy is not just needed for electricity, but for transportation, farming, irrigation, home cook stoves and many other uses. As Emmanuel Macron noted, its also time to be obsessed with results.

Following the Summit, I met with President Paul Kagame of Rwanda. We exchanged our views at depths on how UN Environment may support the Rwandan Government in improving their efforts in the conservation of wildlife while promoting sustainable tourism in the country.
