Sustainable public procurement involves the purchasing power of the governments so that, through public expenditure, a better environmental and social performance of the private sector is stimulated.
Eco-labeling seeks to inform and provide market incentives, so that consumers can distinguish those products that meet certain sustainability requirements.
Both approaches, together with other measures, constitute dynamic sustainable production and consumption policies that improve products, motivating the use of more efficient and responsible production technologies, and providing consumers with reliable information when choosing what to buy.
UN Environment, through the Sustainable Public Procurement and Ecolabelling project (SPPEL), supports the transition in the region.
