United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres launched the Global Crisis Response Group’s first brief on the global implications of the war in Ukraine on food, energy and finance on 13 April 2022.
Prices of food, energy and fertilizer are skyrocketing, given the leading role of Russia and Ukraine in these markets, increasing risks of instability and unrest around the world. The Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance (GCRG) will support developed and developing countries faced with this three-dimensional crisis.
The GCRG will help decision-makers to mobilize solutions and develop strategies and recommendations to help all countries, including the most vulnerable, to weather the interlinked crises. Preliminary analysis suggests that as many as 1.7 billion people in 107 economies are exposed to at least one of three risks – food, energy and finance.
The Secretary-General announced the establishment of the 32-member group – which includes Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, and other heads of UN agencies, development banks and other international organizations – on 14 March 2022 in response to the potential reach and magnitude of the consequences of the war as well as the continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
