Aligning with the sustainable development goals
The Global Framework on Chemicals is accelerating efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by advancing the safe management of chemicals and waste. Building on the progress of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), the Framework drives global collaboration to reduce chemical risks and paves the way for healthier environments and stronger communities worldwide. With its strong focus on all types of pollution, the Framework also supports the UN System’s Common Approach Towards a Pollution-Free Planet.
Key SDGs directly impacted by the Framework’s efforts:
- SDG 3 (Good health and well-being): By promoting safer chemical practices, the Framework helps reduce exposure to hazardous chemicals, mitigating health risks and contributing to healthier populations worldwide.
- SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation): The Framework supports efforts to prevent chemical pollution in water sources, ensuring cleaner water supplies and protecting aquatic ecosystems.
- SDG 12 (Sustainable consumption and production): One of the Framework’s core objectives is to promote the responsible management of chemicals throughout their lifecycle, ensuring sustainable production processes and reducing harmful waste.
- SDG 14 (Life below water): By addressing marine pollution caused by hazardous chemicals, the Framework contributes to the health of oceans and marine ecosystems.
- SDG 15 (Life on land): Through its focus on reducing the impact of harmful chemicals, the Framework helps protect terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity from toxic contamination
