Habari Kushughulikia Mazingira

Worldwide, more than 820 million people, many of them in Africa, are hungry.

The African Union Special Envoy on Food Systems, Dr. Ibrahim Mayaki moderates a panel discussion on the state of Africa's food systems and the opportunities and challenges involved in feeding a rapidly growing population.

The global food systems contribute to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution with agriculture alone generating about one-third of greenhouse gas emissions globally.

Rethinking the global food systems in order to sustainably feed eight billion people is one of the greatest challenges facing nations today as the climate crisis deepens.

UNEP Executive Director Inger Anderson moderated a high level panel discussion on unlocking the full potential of the blue economy in Africa.

Oceans feed us, regulate our climate and generate most of the oxygen we breathe. Oceans also support much of earth’s biodiversity and the world’s economy.

Island and coastal nations in African are heavily reliant on healthy blue ecosystems while also being on the frontlines of climate change. There is an urgent need to safeguard the sensitive and interconnected marine and coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrasses, coral reefs, and kelp forests which provide essential services and goods and contribute to climate resilience.

A pan-African movement of active mobility is taking shape across Africa. In Nairobi, 20 per cent of transport budget is dedicated to active mobility while Rwanda has introduced fortnightly car-free days where roads are turned over to walkers, joggers and cyclists.

Addis Abba, Nairobi and Kigali are just a few African capitals that are undertaking efforts to improve active mobility to help mitigate climate change. UNEP is supporting governments in many African countries adopt greener transportation and active mobility.

Transport is responsible for about one-quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions. Urban transport will be a focus at this year’s Africa Climate Week

Climate change is already hammering Africa, where a deadly combination of droughts and cyclones are sparking food shortages and forcing people from their homes.

That is the unanimous message heard today at the start of Africa Climate Week and Summit 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya.
